I'm still learning to double check absolutely everything that I do, but the truth is, even if you triple check everything that you do, there is still a very, very good chance that you missed something.
For example . . . That order for thirty copies of your novel for your first-ever-super-important-I'm-going-to-look-back-on-this-day-for-the-rest-of-my-life book signing? You entered the wrong address and had it shipped to your college address by accident. The people in the mail room at college sent it back to lulu, who has not yet responded to any of your emails. So now you've ordered another ten books (because that's all you can afford to ship overnight) for this very important day. Worst case scenario, you'll be stuck with the seven books you currently have on hand. Slightly better scenario, you'll have seventeen. If God decides to be VERY gracious and deliver unto you ALL the books, you'll have forty-seven, which you will hopefully sell and not have lying around the house forever and ever, amen.
For another example . . . Those two hundred and fifty business cards you ordered? You put the wrong email address on them. Now, hopefully people will figure that out when they try emailing jshope.author@mail.com and it doesn't work. Then they'll look at the correctly printed facebook page and blog site that you also have listed on the card to find out that you forgot the "g" in "gmail" . . . but maybe they won't.
Oh, and the "you" here is me.
So, yes. I'm still learning. Learning sucks. Learning is hard. Why can't we all just be perfect?!?!?!
Theory: All of the mess-ups in life make the little moments when things go just right that much better.
Still learning,
Jess
UPDATE (7:16pm 6/7/12): Lulu replaced my order for thirty books and is paying for express shipping. My books will be here for the book signing on Tuesday! Thank you, God!
